TITLE: Erik's Nanobots NAME: Erik Shelley COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: erik-melissa@mindspring.com TOPIC: Robot COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. MPGFILE: enanobot.mpg ZIPFILE: enanobot.zip RENDERER USED: Pov-Ray 3.1 for Windows TOOLS USED: cmpeg CREATION TIME: 20 days HARDWARE USED: PII 366 Mhz 128MB RAM ANIMATION DESCRIPTION: This is my attempt to explore what could happen with the creation of self-replication nanorobots. I found out after I started that this idea had already been tried in a previous round of the competition. This is my first entry into the competition. VIEWING RECOMMENDATIONS: ActiveMovie for Windows 95/NT works well DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS ANIMATION WAS CREATED: This animation did not require any complicated techniques. I used Pov-Ray 3.1 for Windows to do everything. The zip file contains all that is required to render the frames. I used nested while-loops to create everything that was made of spheres (molecules). I used random numbers, the clock, and the sin() function to make the molecules move around. I did some algebra to create an equation for moving the camera along a curve away from the monitor and down to the desk. That was probably the most complicated part of the entire animation. When using cmpeg to create the mpg I was able to reduce the file size by 10 0.000000rom 4.36MB to 3.89MB by using -m1 -d1 but it took 90 minutes to create the file instead of 10 minutes.
