TITLE: Last Flight of The Red Baron NAME: George Bredestege COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: george@georgebredestege.com WEBPAGE: www.georgebredestege.com TOPIC: Pursuit/Escape COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD MPGFILE: p1gwb.mpg RENDERER USED: povray 3.1g TOOLS USED: Rhino3d,Paintshop Pro,CMPEG CREATION TIME: Enough to drive my wife to the edge (a hundred hours I estimate) HARDWARE USED: Gateway 233mhz Pentium 2 ANIMATION DESCRIPTION: Based on the true story of Manfred von Richtoffen aka "The Red Baron", who remains the greatest Ace of all time, with 80 victories, using only the machine guns on his aircraft. He was shot down by Canadian Ace Roy Brown (11 victories) of 209 Squadron in a Sopwith Camel. The Baron was simultaneously fired upon by Australian machine gunners on the ground, who also claimed responsibility. The British (true warriors in the best sense) buried their enemy with full military honors. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS ANIMATION WAS CREATED: I am new to ray tracing and animation and have no formal computer training (they didn't offer it in 1983 when I graduated high school) so I had to read the help files and look through the source files of previous competitors to understand "how'd they do that?". Then I borrowed a graphing calculator from my wife (fortunately for me she teaches high school mathematics) and learned about sine waves. Every scene was trial and error and trying again and again. The only software I paid for was Paint Shop Pro 5 (PSP) which I bought years ago. I modeled the aircraft with the trial version of Rhino. I used PSP to create the bitmaps for the earth and the aircraft markings. Using CMPEG seemed to produce the best file in the smallest space, but I had to really do some remembering, having not typed a line of DOS since 1991! I think I got a lot out of very little as far as money spent on software and equipment. I hope you like it! VIEWING RECOMMENDATIONS: Windows Media Player works just fine 24fps
