Creation on the Wall ==================== Josh Humphries - gt2832b@prism.gatech.edu Sophomore Computer Science student at Georgia Tech Files - ------- creation_on_the_wall.txt - This description file creation_on_the_wall.jpg - 800x600 24-bit JPEG creation_on_the_wall.zip - POV-Ray source code This image took 28 hours to render with anti-aliasing set to 0.3 (default). I could have sped it up with bounding boxes but didn't mind the wait. This image took me a total of about 6 days to complete. That's not spare time from six days but nearly 10 hours from each day (at least). However three of those days were spent rendering it, the other three developing it. My original idea was a spin-off of the scene of creation on the Sistene Chapel ceiling (by Michelangelo). The idea was inspired by a friend of mine because he received a birthday card with that same scene but a rabbit instead of Adam. He also came up with the original idea to have a robot arm intead of Adam. From this idea I created a robot arm model and the human hand model (the human hand taking me nearly six hours) with Imagine 3.0. I then rendered this with Imagine and decided that it was kind of dull. I thought it would look better as an image hanging on the wall of a robot's room or something. I then put the image away and started brainstorming for another idea. The idea didn't take long to determine because of the fuss on the comp.graphics newsgroup. After getting kind of sick of people complaining about how broad or narrow a topic for this competition should be, I decided I'd go ahead and try my hand at a microscope (since it was a topic mentioned over and over in the above complaints). I modeled the microscope in POV-Ray and all calculations were done by hand. It doesn't look exactly like a real microscope because I didn't have a microscope or pictures of one around when I modelled it. A friend later showed me pictures of a real one, but then it was too late - I had already modelled it. The piano I had modelled in POV-Ray previously for another scene (again, all calculations done by hand), and I decided it could be used in this scene. I modelled the computer monitor and keyboard in Imagine for a 3D-Studio project. I have a 3DS2POV utility so I just converted the objects to POV-Ray with it. I decided I could also use the scene of creation I had made earlier as a picture on the wall. The outdoor scene is a photograph that comes with 3D-Studio among its many sample image maps. I added the cow with Imagine (the cow object comes with Imagine, I think - I didn't model it) to this picture for humor (although you can hardly see it in the finished rendering). I then threw everything together and rendered away. This is my first try at a competition of this sort so I hope this scene fits and interests people.
