Title: St-Spiff2, Spiff on the planet Ahnooie-4 Artist: Stig M. Valstad, J›s†s, N-7620 Skogn, Norway stigv@interlink.no Hardware: Computer: 486DX2-66, 8MB RAM Software: Renderer: Polyray v. 1.8 Image Editor: Picture Publisher v. 5.0 Heightfield conversion: Dem2Pov v. 1.1c Text Editor: Q v. 3.0 Rendering time: 35m 21s Files: stspiff2.txt; this file stspiff2.jpg; the image stspiff.arj; the stspiff2.pi and stspiff1.pi file, dash.gif dashboard image, and stars.gif background The incredible spaceman Spiff, interplanetary explorer extraordinaire is copyright Bill Watterson. This rendering was initially made using Polyray v1.7. I downloaded Polyray v1.8 the same day I finished the scene, and found a new command that would make the image better. Removing the no_shadow in the second light declaration makes the scene file renderable on v1.7. The entire .pi file is hand-coded, and should be easy to read. The height_field is made from a DEM file and is a part of Grand Canyon turned upside down (it looked more like the alien landscapes in Calvin and hobbes that way). The DEM file was converted to TGA format with Dem2Pov made by Bill Kirby. I have not included gcanyon1.tga because of its size of 1 MB. Apart from the special use of height field, the scene file is very simple. Spiff's spaceship is just a csg construct of simple primitives plus an image map made in Picture Publisher for the dashboard. Where is Spiff himself, you may ask. Well he just ran out of the picture to the right. Always running around that kid.
