Submission for The Internet Raytracing Competition for the month of September 1995 -- Topic: "The Kitchen Counter" Image File name: mlt-ktch.jpg (800x600 24-bit JPEG) Picture title: Not Much Counter Space! Submitted on: 29 September 1995 Submitted by: Marvin Taylor (marvint@csn.org) Other files: mlt-ktch.zip Distribution: All files Copyright 1995 by Marvin Taylor, all rights reserved (but negotiable!) Rendered on: Aspen Systems (DEC Alpha) running Windows NT 3.5. Rendering time: 43 minutes, 24 seconds Rendered with: Persistence of Vision Raytracer Ver 2.2linux386 (the sources hacked by me to compile for WNT). Other software: PaintBrush (Win-OS/2), XV 3.10 (TGA->JPEG conversion) This is my first entry in the competition, and in fact I just started using POVRay earlier this month. (But I've played with SIPP over several years, even developed a script-based version of it). POVRay is impressive. Thanks. I even set up a logon on my roommate's DEC Alpha system (he helped design the motherboard) and put up with WNT for the Alpha's speed. With Linux/X11 and telnet to the Alpha, (which would FTP the source over, render, then FTP the image back), it works okay. Plus the Alpha's many times faster (~10?) than my 486DX33, and it's not even their high-end system. =:-o All of the modeling - the fridge, kitchen table, bar stool, the salt shaker/pepper mill (on the table) and everything were modeled by hand with pencil, paper and a calculator. And a tape measure, and more than a few trips to the kitchen. I've omitted a couple of the images and the INC files. The images don't really matter so much, any will do if the aspect ratio is right. As for the INC files, if you're interested, drop me a note. I would like to polish them up a bit (the stool and table are nice, but the others need some work), but planned to release them freely for non-commercial uses. IMAGES: The two images on the refrigerator are "art1.gif" and "art2.gif" are pictures I scanned, although the quality of the images is poor. ART1 is me at 5 yrs old, ART2 is a shot of my nieces (Amanda & Natasha) from a couple of years back. The aspect of both is 4 high by 3 wide. The image on the right of the refrigerator is a calendar -- "art3.gif" is a composite image of a boat in a harbor (I do NOT know where I got this image off the net, but I've had it for a while), above a calendar for September 1995 (of course). The calendar was made in PaintBrush (under Windows 3.1), and then combined using XV (under Linux/X11). Aspect is roughly 12 high by 7 wide. The poster on the right wall is "art4.gif" (I used a Nagel image "nagel07.gif", which again I obtained years ago from somewhere). The aspect is basically 4 wide by 3 high. The strip of wallpaper on the left wall is "wallppr1.gif". I started with KSKIN.GIF from "teapot.zip" off FTP.POVRAY.ORG, then tweaked and moved and flipped things to look better as a repeating strip. The back wall was originally wallpaper instead of tile, hence the name "wallppr2.gif". This is just a simple tile image; I cheated by using a GIF which has the shading and I didn't use a material_map and render it as tile. Oh well. POVRAY SOURCE FILES: "mltstool.inc" -- Contains the bar-stool "mlttable.inc" -- Defines a 16-panel top, sliding wooden kitchen table (even has some brass hardware underneath). "mltsalt.inc" -- Defines some simple silver/brass salt and pepper shakers and a "plexiglass" pepper mill. "mlt_ukf.inc" -- Defines an pright itchen ridge. "mltcrail.inc" -- Defines a chair rail (ended up being really simple).
