From web_user@dd63-093.compuserve.com: I pulled all six image archives and looked through them all. Saw allot of good ideas and things I'd like to try in the future. I was able to cull the lot in about an hour and a half to 14 images that I felt were above the rest and were it not for reading something about having to make comments on every image I would certainly enjoy voting on this competition. Because so many people use POV and the fact that I had not looked at the program in years I pulled the windows version for a look see. What I saw leads me to believe that you POV user's all must design rockets for NASA on the weekend. I probably need to look deeper but it seems everything needs to be done in a text file! POV user's have my utmost respect, the results and images I have seen done with that program can only be equaled but never exceeded by other programs. Now I look forward to seeing if the voting comes out close to what I thought:) There are some really nice renderings in here. From web_user@gate-asbestos.eai.com: It would be nice to have a definition of 'artistic merit' 'technical merit' ect. I wonder whether I should call a badly done texture bad art because the person didn't have a good sense of aesthetics, or bad technique because they had a texture envisioned that they weren't able to bring to life. or, perhaps the rating system could be changed to 'models' 'textures' 'color use' 'whole gestalt' ect. I also must wonder whether satfly1 and satfly2 are Fair Use under copyright law. The artist claimed to have scanned the background from a book. Especially because you have your own release statement, it looks silly for you to be displaying other's copyright infringements. From web_user@ludwig.scs.uiuc.edu: I think you should definitely allow 600x800 images, because the 800-width, 600-height restriction really puts those of us who want to submit portrait- oriented images at a major resolution disadvantage. A 450x600 picture has much less potential than a 600x800 for sharpness, clarity, etc. People naturally like bigger, higher-res pics, I think, and may be biased against smaller ones. Thanks for considering this. - Paul Thiessen paul@ludwig.scs.uiuc.edu (creator of dna-botl.jpg) From web_user@ludwig.scs.uiuc.edu: I really like the way you have set up the voting system. Very well done. It is really nice not to have to do all the images at once (especially this month). As far as final score tallying, I think it would be neat to see, perhaps in addition to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall top scores, the three images with the highest individual artistic, technical, and conceptual scores. Of course, there may be some overlap... Just a thought. Thanks for doing such a good job! - Paul THiessen paul@ludwig.scs.uiuc.edu From EC24A2618E8A: If the number of entries keep on increasing, two weeks will not be enough to vote. Downloading the images takes a lot of time (and disk space) and comparing all of them takes several long hours (if you don't want to rush your vote). I suggest increasing the voting period to three weeks for the next vote, if there are more than 300 images. Another suggestion: require (not only suggest) the usage of the author's initials as the first part of the name of all entries, so that it is easier to see if someone has sent more than three entries. Or maybe enforce a maximum of three pictures per author and only allow multiple entries if they are renderings of sufficiently different scenes, instead of multiple views of the same scene. From C1B7B4A7929C: This was a huge undertaking, but also very enjoyable. I felt that with so many images it was not really practical to comment on most images. I would like to see a limit of one or maybe two images per person imposed, I was compelled to lower the originality score for multiple viewpoints of the same scene. Also I lowered scores for "using commandeered models" I don't feel like this is wrong, as long as the original author of the model is given credit, but I do feel like it should count down the score, to be fair to people who created full scenes just for this contest.
