TITLE: Last Flight NAME: Eran Bahana & Guy Rauscher COUNTRY: Israel EMAIL: rauscher@netvision.net.il WEBPAGE: http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/7999 TOPIC: Flight COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: foo.jpg ZIPFILE: foo.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.0 for DOS TOOLS USED: Blob Sculptor, Hf-Lab, Orb and Moray 2.5 RENDER TIME: 1 hour 14 minutes and 30 seconds HARDWARE USED: Pentium 133 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This image depicts the end of the last flight in which this engine had participated. The engine is used for miniature aircraft models and was made very close to the real thing. The aircraft model is somewhere behind the engine outside the image. The sand indicates the path of the engine since it hit the ground. The result is an oil leak and the breaking of the propeller. Since sand probably got inside the engine, you can be pretty sure that this indeed was its LAST flight. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The engine was created from basic Povray primitives. The spring is made of cylinders and spheres using a while loop. The propeller was made in Moray with bezier patches. The other side of the propeller is cut by a height field but its hard to notice. The bent bolt was is made of cylinders and spheres and was generated by code adapted from Ian Armstrong's Iaclock image. Besides that the engine is full of details, many of which are not even visible. The textures are either metals from metals.inc or simple texture with a shiny finish. The puddle of oil was made by scaling a blob (which was made in Blob Sculptor) by a very small amount in the y dimention. The texture of the puddle was made using iridescence. The sand was made by a plane and many height fields arranged to make the sand look like it was pushed by the engine when it crashed. The texture used is an adaptation of the sand texture that Steve Gowers used in his Bucket image from the Summer competition. The rocks were made with Hf-Lab and Orb, both programs from John Beale. The image was finished in a haste practically at the deadline so we had to give up other things we wanted to add (actually the image was originally supposed to be one of an aircraft model but only the engine was finished so we had to give up the rest), but it turned out pretty nice and original. note: the files for the height fields and the rocks are provided in the zip file at a lower quality to cut down on storage space. If you have Hf-Lab and Orb, you can double the resolution of the height field and create the rock with 6 recursion levels to achieve the quility of the objects used in the image.
