TITLE: From Past to Future NAME: Theodorich Kopetzky COUNTRY: Austria EMAIL: theo@tk.uni-linz.ac.at WEBPAGE: http://www.tk.uni-linz.ac.at 80/~theo/ray/ TOPIC: Flight COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: tkp2f.jpg ZIPFILE: tkp2f.zip RENDERER USED: PovRay 3.00e TOOLS USED: Moray 2.5 for modeling Photoshop 3.0 to insert my logo at the lower left corner of the picture and to make it a little bit darker. RENDER TIME: approx. 31 hours HARDWARE USED: Pentium 133 MHz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The idea behind this picture was to span an arc from the beginnings of flight (I think I'm pretty close with Leonardo da Vinci) to the future (for that I chose a starting space ship). So I took two ideas of Leonardo, the parachute and the helicopter, and put them into the waiting room of an space port (where would an exhibition of the beginnings of flight better fit than there) where you can see a space ship starting in clouds of dust (yeah, I know, there should not be so much dust on a heavily used space port but the cleaning company had off ;). The ship, btw, is the ship of Captain Future as seen in a TV series shown in Europe in the mid eighties. And, of course, you can see Leonardo himself. The strange things on the floor are some lights... DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The picture was modelled using Moray 2.0 and 2.5. I didn't count the hours but I think for the space ship alone I spent somewhat around 16 hours. The dust around the starting ship is composed of spheres containing emitting halos. I know, there is a dust halo, too. But when I tried that one, tracing time exploded even for small pictures and I planned to do an 800x600 picture. Otherwise the small sketches done by Leonardo would not have been visible. And I think, emitting halos do the trick quite well and it looks pretty realistic, too (at least to me ;) The texture of the ship is based on the texture used by Gerald Swanson for the space station Babylon 5 and fits pretty well here, too. For those interested, the galaxy in the background is the Andromeda galaxy. This is my first entry (together with a second picture) for the competition and I'm pretty new to the field of ray tracing (although I did some stuff earlier already). Source: For those interested I'm providing the source except for the ship. Feel free to use it as long as you mention me (except for the pictures used, here you can mention Leonardo da Vinci :) and send me an e-mail (maybe with an URL, so that I can take a look at your picture).
