DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The objects in this image are fairly self-explanatory -- translucent cylinders, spheres, etc. filled with halos -- and don't really merit explanation. However, the images maps (there are 19), were all created in Povray. One night, my sweetheart (Pete), a non-raytracer, said (apropos of nothing, I might add), "I bet you could make a kaleidoscope with Povray." At first, I thought he meant "model a kaleidoscope", but I soon realized he meant, stick a Povray camera at the end of a long, highly reflective triangular tube, with colored objects at the far end -- a kaleidoscope. Well, there were some blundered attempts (the triangle has to be absolutely equilateral and completely mirrorlike), but he was right. Povray makes a great kaleidoscope. I experimented with different objects (using four or five simple rectangles stacked on top of each other, for example, makes for some very nice quilt-like patterns) and ended up using 50 or 60 superquadrics (I used a total of seven or eight colors) shaped as the "double- pinched cone" in Moray. The traces took anywhere from 9 minutes to 23 minutes and each one was created by rotating the group of end objects just a bit (and changing the background color to fill in a few holes left by the objects). I still have a bit of experimenting to do with this image map maker -- for example, I used glass as the end objects on one try and shot light from behind the glass ... interesting effects with the color streaming about in an odd, but attractive manner.
