TITLE: the nest NAME: N.B. COUNTRY: Finland EMAIL: beliaev@utu.fi TOPIC: Physics & Math COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: nbphm02.jpg ZIPFILE: nbphm02.zip RENDERER USED: POV-Ray 3.01 for Windows 95 TOOLS USED: nothing special .TGA to .JPG, .ZIP, etc. RENDER TIME: about 16 hours HARDWARE USED: Pentium 166MHz 16Mb IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Actually, this is my second image for this round. I was first planning to submit only one entry, when, suddenly, this idea came to me. My other image was almost ready at that time. But I just could not stand the temptation of making this image. The idea behind it is simple: a wasp nest looks like a julia fractal, or is it the other way round? On the other hand, I did a lot of raytracing, but never found any practical application for a fractal object. So present IRTC topic gave me a good opportunity both to use other objects then boxes and spheres, and to look around... DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The text was written in POV-Ray text editor. "Trial and error"raytracing was used instead of graph paper. Most of the objects were made as *.inc files (sometimes nested), so that it was easy to add/remove them to/from the main scene and raytrace only portions of the image. I used 320x240 window (without aa) for test renderings. I tried to raytrace this image using focal blur and thin blue fog to create the impression of depth. It took over one day, and was not as good as the one with just aa0.3. Perhaps, the number blur_samples should have been larger, but I had little time left. So finaly I decided to forget about focal blur All objects are my own (and made for this IRTC round). They are included in the .ZIP. Please feel free to use them. 1. "Nest" is a CSG union of two julia fractals and a CSG union of boxes and cylinders, representing honeycomb. 2. "House_on_the_background" is made of CSG unions and differences of a number of superelepsoids, boxes, cylinders and prisms. 3. "Stones_on_the_foreground" are heightfields from a bitmap created in POV-Ray, similar to the one described in POV-Ray documentation. 4. "Wasp_models" are made of CGS unions of multi-element blobs. They are completely redisigned for this IRTC round versions of my earlier models (of two different insects). They are now much more flexible (legs and wings can be easily moved), and the random function is added to simplify the text when multiple models are used. 5. "Car" is made of CSG of multi-element blobs, wheels are CSG of cylinders, torii (?!) and boxes.
