EMAIL: peteh@earthlink.net NAME: Pete Hoffman TOPIC: Magic COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. TITLE: Magic Hat COUNTRY: USA WEBPAGE: RENDERER USED: LightWave 3D TOOLS USED: PhotoShop to convert to JPG RENDER TIME: 5 hrs 39 min (approx) HARDWARE USED: AMD K6 200, 80 Megs, Scanport SQ4800 Scanner IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This is a frame of an animation of a magic wand with flapping cards for wings. I was wondering what happens when wizards remove their hats for awhile to take a rest. Volumetric lighting increases the render time enough so you may do things that you have to do but don't because your too busy on the computer designing and whatnot (you get a piece of your life back). DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Modler was used to make very simple objects for the stairs, rocks, hat, etc. then ported over to layout to apply the textures. The wand wings flap using three morphing objects per wing (to get the fluid feel) and a little added rotation to accent the flapping. Lightwave now comes with particle systems. A spiral path was made for the particles to follow. Lightwave also includes volumetric lighting. Two spot lights (with applied volumetric settings) were used as keys; a few other fill lights and of couse a backlight to seperate objects from the background. The front and back of the cards were the only scanned textures. All other textures were generated via Lightwave. Total Points: 9241 Total Polygons: 12,097 The point and polygon count for some objects are too high but I plan to have some closeups and wanted to have a clean object. I plan to use the replacement method for objects when doing long shots.
