EMAIL: beliaev@utu.fi NAME: N.B. TOPIC: CHILDHOOD COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. TITLE: Childhood COUNTRY: Finland WEBPAGE: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Gallery/7241 RENDERER USED: POV-Ray 3.02 TOOLS USED: see text RENDER TIME: 8 hours 30 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium 166MHz 16 MB RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Thanks to everybody on IRTC-L mailing list. If it was not for the discussion on topics, I would not make this image. When I was so much younger than today, I was really fond of scale model kits. I assembled a lot of them. As far as I remember, I started at the age of about 5, with the help of my father. Could model kits be one of the reasons why I do raytracing now? So when the "Childhood" topic was announced, after a lot of doubts and hesitations I decided to make a model kit. Of course I was also fond of spaceships, RC-cars, dinosaurs, etc. All of the objects here have certain connections with each other, but it a too long story. Besides, some of it is quite obvious: I could not stand the temptation of making a dinosaur after I made the pink fossil. I also wanted to show all the things in complete disorder, as it used to be when I was a child. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Most of the objects are hand-coded in POV-Ray text editor. The only exception is chocolate foil: it's done with sPatch. Graphics for Red/Blue car and RC car are made with CorelDRAW. Clock face is not an image map but a csg of solid primitives. I scanned the labels from the real paint and glue bottles, model kit manual and box, to add more "realism" to the image. I used a lot of blobs and superellipsoids here, especially for the cars. "Stegosaur" is a single-blob object with spines made of superellipsoids. All of the objects were created especially for the "Childhood" round, however, Red/Blue car and pens were based on the objects I've done before. The code is included in the .zip file.
