===== From spanky@wpi.edu: That jet almost looks like it is underwater, and is not a jet, but a secret new homing torpedo! Watch out flipper! ===== From jamez@xover.ml.org: planes ===== From d97ta@efd.lth.se: eyes: try using an image map (like the fish one in the pov samples) flippers: solution: make the whole dolphin with patches (spatch is great for this) beak: i think that the upper lip is too sharp at the edge. water: looks more like a pond than ocean. bumps usually make better waves than ripple for ocean/lake scenes. ===== From karl@pemail.net: Seeing as you are specifically requesting some comments... Dolphins are awkward to model (see my entry for the school round of ITRC where I modelled the dolphins and patches entirely by hand !) SPatch is an excellent free bezier patch editor, created by Mike Clifton, most people use it - however I cant find his web site any more. Try the search engines. Alternatively try www.rhino3d.com - they are producing an editor which will be charged for, but at the moment they have free betas The jet is a bit too close to the main dolphin - looks almost like its riding on the fin ! Eyes - should be bigger, more oval shaped (scale a sphere by <1.5, 0.8, 0.8> for example) A dolphins eyes bulge out a little. I think the colours are wrong, I think it should be more of a dark blackish pupil with a yellowish white edging. The beak needs to be higher up with the top part larger than the bottom Other than all that (!) not a bad picture ===== From buck@cs.byu.edu: You seem to have identified many of your weaknesses already, let me just suggest that using a normal on the water (rather than just a color_map) can make for much more realistic water. For instance, the ripples should make the plane look wavy, too, because of refraction. Caustics add a lot to underwater scenes, too. ===== From djconnel@flash.net: The models would have been an excellen application of spatch. The refractive properties of the water also need better representation. That is not how a plane would appear from underwater, especially rippled water. ===== From gmccarter@hotmail.com: Ok, you asked. Dolphin eyes are blacker, have no whites, and are much lower on the skull. The problem with the snout is clearly the sharpness of the top edge. They aren't called "bottlenose" for nothing!
