Why is this image so out of focus, it hurts my eyes to look at it.  Was this a

This image is close to being an excellent entry.

However, it has some features I find take away from what at its
core is really an excellent piece of work:

1. the focal blur is way overdone
2. the walls would be better done as height fields than normals.
    At least, the normals need more work.
3. The "fire" is excellent!  The others are hard to recognize, though..
    more work on lighting and texture would help.

The candles are excellent, the concept is very good, the modeling
of the chandalier and the doors and floor is extremely good...
just clean up a few technical elements, and I think this one
could really rank high.

From the 1-day rendering time on PII-400 and image appearance, I conclude
that you used focal blur, right ? (but you don't say anything about it).
Focal blur becomes interesting when there is blurred areas AND sharp areas;
everything is blurred, here, it's boring and time-consuming.  The textures
are also harsh and dark...  The chandelier seems nice, apart excessive
blurring.

Good idea.  The fire is well done.  So are the candles and chandelier.  The
coloring of the candles is a very good idea.  I don't like the wall texture. 
The image as a whole seems irritatingly out of focus.  Is that intentional or a
compression artifact?  This comment by clem@dhol.com.
