Nice spin on the topic.  The modeling and layout is great, but I do have three
suggestions for improvement. 

The light from the lamp seems too white.  I would make it a little yellow.

Try using an area light instead of three lights.  You will like the resulting
soft shadows much better, but you will pay for this in added rendering time.

Check out the curve in a real magnifying glass.  If you use a curved piece of
class and "index of refraction" (ior) of 1.5 you will get a magnifying glass
that actually works.

Warm and authentic.  The lamp is amazing.  Good table and magnifier, too.
But the straight-on alignment of the newspaper bothers me.  Makes the scene seem
more artificial and rigid.  Yes, I see that image_map flaw on the newspaper.

Nicely done!

A few quick suggestions :

* the newspaper doesn't look like newspaper... it needs
  a touch of granite to make it look right.
* the perspective is a bit strange -- the hat looks
  as though it extends into the wall.

Still, it is a nicely assembled scene and a clever play
on the topic.

Original interpretation of the theme. The magnifying glass is very good,
and 
the flower pattern on the lamp is nicely kitsh;  the image-map you put on
the newspaper is not very realistic, font is too large, paper is too white,
without imperfections, columns comes too close from the edge...
