===== From prizog@hotmail.com: I would like to make a linguistic point regarding "realism." "Photo-realism" is the quality of being indistinguishable from reality EXECEPT by content. That is, one can have a castle floating through the air that has the quality of "photo-realism." "Realistic" should (?) mean that the scene is indistinguishable from reality except by its technical errors. A castle (not floating) with poor texturing is still "realistic." "realistic implies that the object could exist in the real world at some point. "Surreal" or "surrealistic" (the latter may have been invented for "Myst", which is itself surreal and photorealistic (sorta)) is the opposite of realistic. This image is indeed surreal. Good job. ===== From jerry@hoboes.com: Nice bricks. That's a pretty heavy-duty mailbox. Do they really use 1-inch steal for mailboxes in Texas? :*) I think the Dali-esque nature of the wooden boards could have been better with a more clearly wooden texture. ===== From Sean_Hamilton@amrcorp.com: I like the surrealist aproach in this one. The brick texture is nice. The floating stairs add an element of hope to the scene. ===== From jasondinger@hotmail.com: the sky_sphere isn't very convincing. maybe too high of a sampling rate. i'm not sure exactly, but the colors don't blend very believably. ===== From amason@cs.uct.ac.za: it's like, alright isn't it? why are the stairs floating in space? nice variation on the bricks. mountains might be a tad too purple. mailbox is way shiny. houses don't do it for me, look a bit like trainset models. ===== From pmccombs@hotmail.com: Good water, good composition. ===== From bonsalva@bellsouth.net: Good sky color. ===== From bsieker@techfak.uni-bielefeld.de: The water looks quite convincing but the rest is a bit dull. Something seems to have gone wrong with the bump map on the wall to the left. ===== From johnson@pharmacy.arizona.edu: Ok. The flag just sprouts out of the mailbox, and the stairs look less like an intentional surrealistic element, than simply unfinished. ===== From jaime@ctav.es: Nice looking (photo, hyper or surrealistically talking). ===== From Varyk@aol.com: thanks for mentioning surrealism in your docs, otherwise people would be = all over you about those steps. If you had done the mailbox in POV with = csg instead of importing it, maybe the visible joints between the box and= cylinder parts wouldn't have happened. Seam on mailbox door could have = been eliminated as the curved part it is from can't be seen and could hav= e been left off. The underwater detail is a nice touch. I like the embo= ssed "US MAIL." ===== From gmccarter@hotmail.com: Good choice on the surrealism. Too many scenes try (and fail) to achieve hyper-realism. This image boldly says it's NOT real, which is exactly what you wanted. Interesting sky. Really good dirty flood water with the ground plane underneath. Good lighting, except for the jarring straight shadow in the bottom center of the image. Name and title on the image is *much* too wordy, how about just "MDiez 98"? ===== From chipr@niestu.com: Beautiful, surreal, excellent use of color and texture. ===== From r@flametree.hunterlink.net.au: the brick bump map needs aligning and try using many height fields for water instead of a plane. ===== From r@203.102.40.35: nice image steps are floating though???? Notable for textures
