TITLE: A watery end NAME: Mick Hazelgrove COUNTRY: UK EMAIL: michael.hazelgrove@virgin.net WEBPAGE: http://freespace.virgin.net/michael.hazelgrove/index.htm TOPIC: Water COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: dragwat.jpg ZIPFILE: dragwat.zip RENDERER USED: Pov Ray 3.1 TOOLS USED: Corelpaint 7 to make the heightfield RENDER TIME: HARDWARE USED: 300mhz Pentium 2 with 128mb ram IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The dragonflies are mating. The males are displaying for the female - unfortunately she's just been eaten by a fish, only bubbles remain to mark her passing, soon they will be gone. The males - they'll be gone too, in search of another female. Just another day in the watery world of a pond. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I have really struggled with this picture. The basics were easy, the water and the mist. The water lilleys have been modified from some code written for a previous entry, the colours, textures and compostion have been changed. The dragonflies caused a lot of head scratching and only worked when I gave up using an image map for the wings and moved to using a height field. A brilliant suggestion from Bob. Thanks Bob. The heightfield was constructed from a picture downloaded from the web and converted to a black and white pic in CorelPaint. Radiosity was used in the final rendering and adds tiny subtle touches of color, enriching the colour and texture of the final images.
