Good work on the reality element, generating the mountain from USGS data.  I see
how the modern view of the mountain reminds us of the history, but I would have
rather seen a picture of that history; perhaps the moutain erupting, or a view
of the area immediately after the event.  Is the tree in the foreground meant
as a reminder of the destruction of flora by the eruption?  If so, why is it
brown rather than ashen?

Gee, you did the same as I.  You also got tired of just 8-
bit conversions for the DEM files and wrote your own 
program.  I checked your code and it is very similar to 
mine.  I gave extra tech points for the effort.

Now, about the image.  Although the foreground tree is 
out of focus I still find it distracting.  I think it would be 
better if placed even more off center.  Also the colors 
seem to washed out on my monitor.  You have zoomed in 
really close on the heightfield, try adding more texture to 
the landscape to hide the triangles.  Also you are a bit 
weak on the topic.  Showing the eruption would nail it 
right on topic.  This is a good start, just a little more 
work could make this a first rate image.
