Being a History of Art teacher made everything more difficult. I wanted to make something different like History of Jazz, for example, or the history of Salsa -the musical one- but I could not synthetize so much elements in a single scene. In fact, I think that History will become a personal project to work with. Browsing and looking for something feasible in an art's book, I found Tutankhamon again. Away from my traditional sources, I decided to find something on the internet, and I found it. The reference site, The Tomb of Tutankhamon, is a very detailed reference on how Carter found Tut's final residence. It relates the accomplishment in a way you cannot stop reading. I decided to represent Tut. Why Tutankhamon? Tutankhamon was not the most important king discovered, though. Dead being a child, he did not make huge works. Besides the fact that it was by that time, the only intact tomb found ever, this discover represents to me: a) The influence of a theology change in a closed culture. Tutankhamon was Akenaton heir, a brief king for a brief period in Egypt's history., a period with only one God in a plenty-of-gods society. b) The persistence of death as a component of life itself, and its influence in a long period of time, as well as the relationship between all instances of everyday life with death. c) The hard process that archaeology follows dealing with ancient objects. d)This was an encounter with three thousand years of history, a remarkable step in how we interpret history. e)Arts. Although very brief, this period embraces a different treatment of themes in Ancient Egypt. In the walls of these chambers, representations of a quiet and family life were first made. In the same way that baroque focused in everyday life, putting aside religion...and renaissance. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: 1) Defining the environment. Primarily inside a box, a few necessary walls were set to define where Tut would be. The wall texture is made with a height field made from a solarized image. This tga image was a Corel bmp texture -for backgrounds , and was converted to tga and solarized in a grayscale mode. The floor is made with the same height_field, using different transformations. Colors of these areas are given by the combination of a layered texture in the height_field and light_source. Osiris, on the other hand -which is the decoration in the front wall, is an image map -onto a very thin box-from an image taken from the referenced web site, with a high "bumps" value in the normal component. 2) Tutankhamon mask was the first model, basically because all the stuff inside depends on him. I modeled it with sPatch from the "He"(1) tutorial. Inlaid and decorations were modeled in several layers to assign different textures later. 3) The coffin was modeled taking the mask as a model, to fit properly. Those areas than would not be needed were deleted. 4) Next was Anubis (the dog in the right side). I decided to take the body out and model a kind of cloth to embrace the god. Anubis head and torso were modeled in different layers also. Anubis is placed above a kind of device of transportation, which was modeled with sPatch too. 5)Chests (back)were modeled after the ones I saw in the reference. They open from one side instead of the front and are made from squashed cylinders and cubes scaled. The decoration is set in three layers in sPatch. 6)There is a kind of armoire to the left of Anubis. This is a textured box. 7)Since the reference showed a big amount of objects, I decided to model a simple one -and repeat it- to "fill" areas from the scene that would look empty otherwise. These are three cylinders and a deformed grid, in sPatch. 8)The mirror is in place of the treasure's door. I used this mirror -a box with a mirrored finish- to reflect an image of Carter. At the same time, it adds 'volume' to the scene. Upper decoration is made from basic spheres and cylinders. Carter is a person from "povpeople.inc". The only element added is a hat, barely visible- to disguise the appearance of the person's head. Carter is placed out of the direct range of the camera and in front of Tut. He visible only through the mirror. 9)Lights used in the scene are all spotlights. A very small fog minimizes the intensity of oranges.
