JPGFILE: rasballo.jpg RENDERER USED: Raydream Studio 5 raytracer TOOLS USED: Raydream Studio 5 , Micrografix Picture Publisher, Adobe Illustrator RENDER TIME: 30 minutes HARDWARE USED: PENTIUM 233 MMX WITH 64 MEG SDRAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: On March 20, 1999 at 9 hours 54 minutes GMT, the crew of the balloon, Orbiter 3, became the first in history to circumnavigate the globe with a non-stop, non-refueled flight. It lasted 19 days 1 hour and 49 minutes. I was working on a "Nautilus crossing the North Pole" kind of picture when I heard about the balloonists. So I changed my subject in honor of Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I created the main balloon in the free-form modeling area using circular cross-sections. The whole balloon is there, but I would lose detail if I backed the camera out, so I chose to focus on the gondola, which was made using csg objects over and over again. The propane tanks are free-forms that were lathed. The solar-cell kite is mainly a csg object. I used Four Elements for the sky and flame on the propane burner. The mountains were also made in Four Elements. I purposely tilted the camera to see the sky as the two heroes would have seen it traveling in the jet stream.
