My best guess is that that is smoke. And it doesn't work. Does the

This fairly simple scene is made to be outstanding by the lighting.
Really makes the image.

The ocean and island don't look quite right, but the monster is
beautiful. :)

It works for me.  I really looks like a giant squid, not just 
a squid with a toy lighthouse.  I like the fire and how it 
illuminates the scene.  The only flaw is the smoke.  It 
looks like a texture applied to a cylinder.  Great image, 
my favorite.
