TITLE: Medusa's head NAME: Henk Lasschuit COUNTRY: The Netherlands EMAIL: henklass@dds.nl WEBPAGE: http://huizen.dds.nl/~henklass TOPIC: Horror COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT JPGFILE: hlmedusa.jpg RENDERER USED: POV-Ray 3.1 TOOLS USED: Graphic Converter 2.6 (for conversion only) RENDER TIME: 39 minutes, 32 seconds HARDWARE USED: Apple Macintosh G3/300 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: It's the head of Medusa. the old Greek lady with the snakes on her head, who was so ugly that you'd turn into stone from sheer fright if you looked at her without the help of a mirror or something. I hope you read this text before looking at the picture. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The main purpose of this image was to build a snake out of some torus-segments and connecting them with the help of trigonometric functions. Second purpose was to put the snakes on the head using programming loops with some random variation in position and rotation. The rest of the head is CSG. And I came up with some pretty nice textures, I think. To put some kind of unity into this work of art, I gave the eyes of the snakes the same texture as the eyesockets in the head and the skysphere's pigment is gradient from the pigment of the lips to that of the teeth. I have been in doubt about whether I should give the lady some eyelids, but I kinda like these eyeballs bulging from their hollow sockets. There's still a problem with my Mac-zipfile. Mail me if you're interested in the sourcecode (16K).
