DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The only idea that I had in mind when I started this image was that of a terrified person confronted with an horrific situation. I started by creating a NURBS model of the person's head. Up until about a week before submission, the image was to include the whole front of the face, in profile, but I gave up on some of the details and decided to just focus on the lower part of the face; particularly the gaping mouth. This is partly because I find properly shaped eye sockets pretty hard to get right. Then I started to create the bonfire, in order to give me some idea as to where the scene was heading. The trees were the next logical step in the realisation of the image. I used the great "Deciduous Tree Ver. 0.4US" plugin to generate them in a most time-efficient manner. The ferns/weeds/whatever on the ground were then created by simply arraying bent, elongated cones and creating a suitable scatter object. Rocks were done by adding noise to scaled geospheres. The brick wall was then created by arraying chamfer boxes, adding noise and then manually displacing some of the stones. A quite shiny material was applied to the face to give the impression that the person has been perspiring quite a lot, given that she's in quite an emotional state. Also, the material is very pale, again to indicate shock.
