This idea had potential.  The modeling on the ants could use some more detail.  The dirt looks ok, but it looks more like an upper atmosphere view of a desert, minus the interesting looking ant hill on the right.  And of course, the water drop.  That could have used some work too.  It looks kind of like some sort of oily goo.  Now, for your first image, this is very nice.  I have to admit, your modeling skills are beyond what mine where when I started.  Keep it up.

I would rather have seen you do a box with windows in it, rather than submit something that is very loosely based on the topic.  The competition is every two months so there is always time for the next round.  Sorry if i sound a little harsh.  A good place to go for learning and help is the povray newsgroup. good soil! Ants are a little odd shaped -- check out a 
readily available book for kids "Monster Book of Ants" 
or some such.  I used some of the pics in there while 
modelling my ant in landmark round.

The texturing and shaping of the ground is nice.  The 
ants look good, although not totally realistic.  The water 
droplets don't look bad, but maybe should be a little 
irregular in their shaping, and while the texture is cool, 
I'm not sure how realistic it is.  I kinda like the texturing 
on the vase too.
