JPGFILE: thegrid.jpg ZIPFILE: thegrid.zip RENDERER USED: 3DStudioMax2.5 TOOLS USED: Photoshop5.5 for copyright text and jpg-file RENDER TIME: 9 minutes HARDWARE USED: Dual PII400, 256MB Ram IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The Grid is city of the future. This megastructure floats in space and has its own artificial sun. It consists of three actual grids: the construction mesh, which holds the container-houses, an infra- structure grid which contains energy-, water- and waste-pipes, and a transportation grid which functions as public streets. The image shows a container-housing unit being hovered into an empty gridlot by a thruster-satelite. Imagine this is your mobile home which can be moved through space and fit onto the grid wherever you want to. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Nearly everything is made out of simple cubes, the grid structures being rendered with wire-materials. I did the sun with a light-red volume omni which also serves as node source for the flare effect, and a combustion apparatus makes the sun's flames. Another blueish volume light with noise plus the renderers starfield thingy in the background, glow for the satelite: I spent more time on atmosphere and lighting than on the actual modeling. You can see an early pic with only the lights and a first, rough grid cube in the zip-file. My intention was to create a colorful sci-fi city pic by combining an old cityplaning concept, the grid, with futuristic ideas and fx.
