DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: First and foremost was research. I went down to the local library and got out about 15 books on insects and spiders. I sat down and read. When i was finished going through all the books i sat down decided that i wanted to model a beetle. I played with a bunch of techniques and found that building the splines and surfacing them with patches was the best way for me to obtain the desired effect. (it also allows me to change the face value and make the little guy way fewer faces) i have been experimenting with a cartoon type rendering and i thought that the model needed to be displayed in a simple way as to show off it's high detail. the rendering is fairly basic all the ambient and diffuse colors were the same for all the materials. there are various degrees of bump maps. 4 lights (2 key, 2 fill) the text is 3d.
