TITLE: Callandor Waits NAME: Steve Martin COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: ecprod@bellsouth.net WEBPAGE: http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/~ecprod TOPIC: Fantasy COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: callando.jpg ZIPFILE: callando.zip RENDERER USED: BMRT 2.5 TOOLS USED: pencil, paper, calculator, patience RENDER TIME: unknown HARDWARE USED: homebrew PII-400MHz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Callandor, a crystal sword-shaped "sa'angreal", an object which allows a man who can channel the One Power to channel incredible amounts of the Power. Callandor hangs suspended in the Stone of Tear, untouchable by any save the hand of the one true Dragon Reborn. Callandor is from the Robert Jordan series "The Wheel of Time". This image was inspired by the cover of book 3, "The Dragon Reborn", artwork by Darrell Sweet. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: This is my first "semi-serious" work done with a RenderMan-compliant renderer. I had a blast. All modelling was done by trial-and-error with pencil and paper. The image was done with the excellent Blue Moon Rendering Tools renderer by Larry Gritz and Exluna (thanks, Larry, for giving the world such a cool renderer for free) on a Red Hat 7.1 Linux box. The decorative scrollwork at the bottom of the columns was done with a custom displacement shader and a texture map done with the Gimp. The fires were done with a slighly modified shader called "KMFlame" downloaded from www.renderman.org. The glow around the sword is done with the "glow" shader listed in the RenderMan Companion. The sword is all mine.
