Excellent detail and texturing for the fighters!  The destroyer, background
(starfield), and (as you said) the explosion could have used more detailed. 
Another little bit of detail that would be nice (as I tried to create in my
image) would have been to have the projectile streams follow a curve so to make
it look like the turrets were adjusting their aim as the battle went on.

It isn't obvious from the picture that the large ship is supposed to
be a freighter, or that it's actually a warship in disguise.  It looks
unrealistically smooth.  Also, why does it have a door open if it's
fighting, and hasn't launched any fighters of its own through it?

Is the upper fighter on fire, or is that the normal engine thrust
which the lower figher does not have because its engines have been
shot out?  It was also not clear that the fighters were supposed to be
asymmetric as opposed to having been damaged in the fight.

I agree the explosion is not bad.
