TITLE: Cooties NAME: Greg Gargett COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: ggargett@attbi.com TOPIC: Loneliness COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: irtclnly.jpg ZIPFILE: irtclnly.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.1g TOOLS USED: Moray 3.3a, Paintshop Pro 5 RENDER TIME: Not worth mentioning HARDWARE USED: Gateway P850 XL IMAGE DESCRIPTION: I thought I'd try to inject a little humor into a rather depressing subject. As I was thinking of an angle to the topic I thought, "What causes loneliness? Could there be a biological factor?" So, I took out the old, trusty Jr. Scientist Discovery microscope and examined a drop of my own sweat under high magnification. I should have known...cooties. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The "environment" -- Set the background color to white. To make it look like an old microscope was used I made a layered texture that makes a hole, a "light fade" from the middle of the view to the edge of the hole, dirt specs and a piece of lint. Put the texture on a plane. The cooties -- Heightfields. I was going to use blobs or patches but used a heightfield just as a test and found that it gave just the look I wanted. A nice "cell wall" appears. Added a little iridescence to the texture to simulate the light refraction you see in microscopic pictures.
