Ludovico Sforza, AKA "Il Moro", Duke of Milan, is going to visit Leonardo's workshop. Leonardo has finished the boat with paddles, and Ludovico wanna take a look at the boat as soon as possible, because all of the things Leonardo has told him about it. He is anxious. Before Ludovico arrives, Giacomo Caprotti, AKA "Salai" (devil), a Leonardo's young apprentice, is cleaning the workshop, and now that he's almost finished, he is staring at the boat, thinking Leonardo is a genius, and he is a lucky man being his apprentice. Maybe someday he'll resolve the problem of flying, his Master's obsession. If only the Duke would get interested on the Aerial Screw... And then the light of the sun comes thru' the windows... good augury. It has been a long time since I submitted my last work to the IRTC, so I thought it was time to do so (I really needed it). When I heard about the topic, I thought in Leonardo da Vinci, a man I have admired since I was a child. As an inventor, he pointed out the ways where other walked later. His inventions are old technology (he could only count with human strength), but they have something revolutionary. Most of his ideas have survived him as sketches and it's well known that only few of them were developed. I have found no notice about this boat with paddles was ever built. But when I see it I see the Mississipi ships, but in the XV century. The aerial screw never was made, but the man who developed the helicopter always mentions Leonardo's aerial screw as the strarting spark. The horse is related to the monument projected for the mausoleum of Ludovico's Father, a big horse (8 mts. tall) that never was made (by Leonardo, it has been made recently by a foundation). The pullers are here to show other piece of old technology and the painting in Leonardo's room is Mona Lisa. Actually Mona Lisa was painted later (1503-1505) but I wanted to include her here anyway. For the curious ones, the title of the book over the table is: "Trattato della persistenza di visione". I hope you enjoy it. Bye. Txemi Jendrix DESCRIPTION OF HOW THE IMAGE WAS CREATED: The horse is a poser model created by Sharkey. Salai (the apprentice) is a poser model (and its props) created by John Malis (Jon). The broom is a poser prop created by Nerd3D. None of these models are included in the zip due to copyright questions. Modelling: The boat itself was made in Hamapatch by pieces so it could be textured separetely later in Moray. Other objects were done in Hamapatch aswell; the anchor, the Duke's armchair, the pullers, the screw of the aerial screw, the rolled papers, the moulding on the top of Leonardo's room and all the ropes. The rest, including the paddles and their mechanism and the aesel where the Gioconda is set (almost hidden), are CSG objects done in Moray. The horse was posed in Poser, exported to .obj, edited in Anim8or, exported once again to .obj and converted with poseray to udo/inc. The floor and the garbage are heightfields. The paddles and the rudder are animatables. Texturing: There are more than 50 textures, most of them layered ones. The sketch on the wall, the Gioconda, the last supper in the moulding of the door, the poser man, the book on the table, the garbage and the floor use image maps. All the rest are procedural textures. The hull, for example, has 3 layers; 1st is a wooden one, the 2nd is the same as 1st but with the map inverted and a slope map in the normal to make it look like planks, the 3rd is a pigment to filter the color (to dye the wood) The floor has 2 layers; 1st is the image map used to make the heightfield, 2nd is an agate pigment scaled. The ropes of the pullers are tubes made in Hamapatch. To make them look as ropes, the pigment uses a spiral1 color map (8 arms), that has been scaled and translated to fit the model. The scatering effect is made using a box with the same size as the workshop filled with media. Lightning: There is a main pointlight (a bit orange) outside the workshop that interacts with media and casts shadows. All of the rest use fade power and distance, and are: An arealight between the pullers and the aerial screw that casts shadows. 2 pointlights close to the front wall; one near the angel's sketch and another between the angel and the door. They don't cast shadows. Other 2 pointlights are close to the boat. The one close to the rudder cast shadows, the other don't. Finally, there is another pointlight (a bit pink) inside Leonardo's room. The scene was rendered using antialiasing 0.1. I used The Gimp to edit and (in some cases) create the image maps, and also to add the title and the signature, to adjust the brightness and contrast and to convert from png to jpg. The title is not wrong. Leonardo used to write form right to left mirroing the letters. Maybe because he was left-handed. The zip file contains everything except the horse, the man and the broom (copyrighted items). All the image maps are included. Quiza algun dia el solucionara el problema del vuelo, la obsesion de su maestro. Si solo el Duque se interesase por el tornillo aereo... Y entonces la luz sol llega a traves de las ventanas... buen augurio. Hace bastante tiempo desde que presente mi ultimo trabajo a la IRTC, asi que pense que ya era hora de hacerlo (realmente lo necesitaba). Cuando me entere del tema, pense en Leonardo da Vinci, una persona a la que he admirado desde ninio. Como inventor, el apunto a los caminos que otros han recorrido mas tarde. Sus inventos son tecnologia antigua (solo podia contar con la fuerza humana), pero tienen algo revolucionario. La mayoria de sus ideas le han sobrevivido como bocetos y es bien conocido que solo unos pocos se llevaron a la realidad. No tengo noticia de que este bote con palas se contruyera. Pero cuando lo veo veo los barcos del Mississipi, pero en el siglo XV. El tornillo aereo nunca fue construido, pero el hombre que desarrollo el helicoptero siempre menciona a Leonardo como como la chispa que inicio todo. El caballo esta relacionado con el monumento proyectado para el mausoleo del padre de Ludovico, un gran caballo (8 mts. de alto) que nunca fue realizado (por Leonardo, ha sido realizado recientemente por una fundacion). Las poleas estan ahi tambien para mostrar otra pieza de tecnologia antigua y la pintura en la habitacion de Leonardo es Mona Lisa. Realmente Mona Lisa fue pintada mas tarde (1503-1505) pero queria incluirla aqui de todas formas. Para los curiosos, el titulo de la portada del libro es: "Trattato della persistenza di visione". Salai (el aprendiz) en un modelo de poser (con sus props) creado por John Malis (Jon). La escoba es una prop de poser creada por Nerd3D. Ninguno de estos modelos esta incluido en el .zip por cuestiones de copyright. Modelado: El bote en si mismo esta hecho en Hamapatch por piezas para que pudiera ser texturado separadamente en Moray. Otros objetos que se hicieron en Hamapatch; el ancla, el sillon del Duque, las poleas, la tela del tornillo aereo, los rollos de papel, la moldura en lo alto de la puerta de la habitaci_n de Leonardo y todas las cuerdas. El resto, incluidas las palas y su mecanismo y el caballete donde esta la Gioconda (casi oculto), son objetos CSG hechos en Moray. El caballo fue posado en Poser, exportado a .obj, editado en Anim8or, exportado otra vez a .obj y convertido con Poseray a UDO/inc. El suelo y la basura son heightfields. Texturado: Hay m_s de 50 texturas, la mayoria por capas. El boceto en la pared, la Gioconda, la ultima cena en la moldura de la puerta, el hombre, el libro sobre la mesa, la basura y el suelo utilizan mapas de imagen. El resto son texturas procedurales. El casco de la barca, por ejemplo, tiene 3 capas; la 1a es madera, la 2a es igual que la 1a pero con el mapa invertido y un slope map en la normal para que pareciesen planchas o listas de madera, la 3a es un pigmento para filtrar el color (para teniir la madera). El suelo tiene 2 capas; la 1a es el mapa de imagen usado para generar el heightfield, la segunda es un pigmento de agata escalado. Las cuerdas de las poleas son tubos hechos en Hamapatch. Para que parecieran cuerdas, el pigmento utiliza un mapa de color de spiral1 (8 brazos), que luego ha sido escalado y trasladado para encajar en el modelo. El efecto de scatering (los rayos de luz) se hizo usando un cubo con el mismo tamanio que el taller lleno de media. Iluminacion: Hay una luz principal (un poco naranja) fuera del taller que interactua con la media y lanza sombras. Todas las demas luces utilizan fade power y fade distance, y son: Una arealight entre las poleas y el tornillo aereo, que lanza sombras. 2 pointlights cerca de la pared frontal; una cerca del boceto del angel y otra entre el angel y la puerta. No arrojan sombras. Otras 2 pointlights estan cerca del bote. La mas cercana al timon arroja sombras, la otra no. Finalmente hay otra pointlight (un poco rosa) dentro de la habitacion de Leonardo. La escena se renderizo utilizando antialiasing 0.1. Utilice El Gimp para aniadir el titulo y la firma, editar y crear (en su caso) los mapas de imagen, ajustar el brillo y contraste y convertir de png a jpg. El titulo no esta equivocado. Leonardo solia escribir de derecha a izquierda y con las letras al reves. Seguramente debido a que era zurdo. El archivo zip contiene todo menos el caballo, el hombre y la escoba (por limites del copyright). Todos los mapas de imagen estan incluidos.
