IMAGE DESCRIPTION: I stumbled upon this nice little piece of 'Old Technology' on the web. I'd heard the term "Magic Lantern" before but had no idea that it was the instrument and forerunner of what we all take for granted these days - moving pictures. Looking around for more variations in design came up with two and three lens versions, and they were nice, but I thought this little chap had so much more 'character'. You would use coloured slides which were hand painted onto glass and then feed them into the main box where a strong light would shine through the image and then project it onto a wall. This was the 'entertainment' of the day for many. For those interested in the original image that I used for reference, you can find it here: http://www.mav-magazine.com/Oct2000/magic_lantern.htm And for a nice write-up on the history of "Magic Lanterns", have a look here: http://www.magiclanternshows.com/history.htm DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Not really a lot to say about this apart from the rose flower-head is from Rozzin (I did the stem and leaves), the plants are Hamakazu's(?) - I think that's right, but thanks goes to them anyway. The carpet and rug tile patterns came from http://www.enkil.demon.co.uk (and I can't find or remember where the 'stone' wallpaper came from). The rest, I modelled using sPatch, and basically, I tried to capture a scene where the proud owner of this Magic Lantern has left the door open and the light in the hallway is shining through and onto it. I enjoyed producing this scene and learnt a lot about sPatch. Good luck to all. :) ~Steve~
