TITLE: Easter Island NAME: Marcelo Carvajal COUNTRY: Chile EMAIL: marcelo@carvajalcassinelli.com WEBPAGE: www.carvajalcassinelli.com TOPIC: Mystery COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: moai_.jpg RENDERER USED: Maya TOOLS USED: Maya, Rhino eros 3D RENDER TIME: about 10 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium IV 2.0GHz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: The Moai of Easter Island (Chile) are one of the greatest mysteries of all time. How were they built?. Why?. They average 12 to 25 ft tall and the tallest is 32 ft tall and weighs 50 tons. There's a lot of legends, theories and interpretations... One of them claims that it took 30,000 man-days to carve, transport and erect a single statue. There're hundreds of them along the coastline and mysteriously some of them face inland, with their backs to the sea. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I used Rhino3D to model the three moai and the ground. Maya was used to render the entire scene. The sky was created using EnvSky with cloud textures. I used bump mapping for the stone and its surface was "hand painted" using 3D Paint Tool. For the grass I used surfaces with different fur descriptions and noisy parameters (color, length, angle, etc.) to make them more realistic.
