Though I get the old/new simple/complex opposites, I'm just being pedantic :)

I think the lighting in the scene looks a bit flat and unnatural, like a light
placed too close to the camera so we can't really see much of the shadows.

While this image is good.  There needs to be something compelling to draw the
eye and mind into the scene.  Also consider lighting to help focus the eye and
turn the scene a more 3D perspective.
