Not the most original interpretation possible, I'm sure, but I have indeed 
used negative space to create absence.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: 

Lots of low-diffuse, high-specular surfaces, with blurred reflections. Very 
little colour used. No radiosity; lighting is two area lights and five 
shadowless distance lights.
