A strong wind is blowing and the heavy rain is obstructing the sight. The homecommers are looking for the guiding light. But nothing can be seen. And the disaster takes its course. The picture shows the lighthouse "Roter Sand" which stood in the estuary mouth of the river Weser (Germany). The ship in the background doesn't have any archetype and isn't much detailed. Some time ago I saw a picture of this lighthouse and I was thinking about a 3d-model of it but the idea felt into oblivion. Then I saw the IRTC topic "Absence" and the lighthouse came back into my mind but this time without any light. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I decided to use Moray to model the objects instead of writing the povray code directly (my favorite method) because of the amount of objects. But some objects and materials are to complex to handle them with moray. So I added some direct code to the scene. The trunk is a single lathe object with some recesses. The top of the tower consists of many primitives and wasn't hard to model though is was time expensive. The flag is a mesh object created with megapovs cloth-sim feature. This wasn't necessary because the details can't be seen but I like this object and so I left it in the scene. The textures are multilayer textures to simulate the algae sedimentation and rust. The ocean surface is a high detailed heighfield (created with megapov, too). The texture was created with the aid of the "Realistic water with POV-Ray" tutorial by Christoph Hormann. The "atmosphere" is a hollow box with various media statements to simulate the several effects (clouds, rain, fog, spray). The ship isn't much detailed since it is hidden partially by the rain. It has a simple body and the rig consists of cylinders and bezier patches.
