Your explanation of the scene is really ingenious and made me smile. However, unfortunately, this is not immediately visible in the image (as it is more an intellectual view on the concept) which shows a rather complete set of chess. No absence there.
However, I don't know why, but I find your scene fascinating, perhaps because it suggests to me the atmosphere of the film Ivan Grosny (Eisenstein) and I see those pieces of chess like so many boyars waiting fearfully for their king.
You should work a bit more on your textures. The rug is ok, but the wood of the chess pieces is too gross, for instance.
