===== From chipr@niestu.com: Nice concept, good detailing on the scene, good modeling on the ship. Neat work on the lightning. ===== From agage@mines.edu: Nice concept, and well done in many areas, though I have a few suggestions. First, perhaps a minor point, but the motion seems a bit jerky in the first few frames at least. I'm not sure what the framerate is, but the angular motion of the ship bobbing toward the camera seems a bit coarse. Having more intermediate frames might help. Second, while the motion on the boat is good, and the wave effect is very well timed with the bobbing of the boat, some kind of spume effect would help the animation. For instance, having water spraying off of the prow as it dips under water would be great. Also, shouldn't the boat bob up a bit under the waves, rather than just listing? Next, the lightning might work out better with a little atmosphere -- with the lights you put with the each occurance of lightning, it would blur things more realistically. I understand how much this increases render time, however. Finally, I was a bit curious about how the boat totally leaves the surface of the water in the last frame. I understand that while using height fields for waves (as I believe you did) the base will be square, but I couldn't help but notice. Please don't think that I see nothing good with this animation -- the model of the ship is superb, the use of atmosphere is great, and this animation ranks well on my list. ===== From dick@buckosoft.com: Very nice. I love the background sky. I think the sails unfurl a little soon and a little fast. One thing needed is water splashing off the hull and deck. ===== From gmccarter@hotmail.com: Excellent condensed story. You packed a whole story into a few seconds' time. Unlike many others, this one has a beginning, middle, and end. Good light effects within the lightening, but needs a bit more variety: I keep seeing the same flashes over and over. Great waves and rocking motion on the ship! ===== From nazrat@athabascau.ca: Good work on the waves. Going to try for the whitecaps next? I am glad that the sails were furled during the bad weather. ===== From bill@apocalypse.org: Very cool idea and nicely done overall. ===== From r@dmsst59.d.resnet.pitt.edu: The lightning effect is very nice. However, the animation needs more frames to prevent the "jerky" effect and the interaction of the waves and the ship is unrealistic. Notable for lighting ===== From r@pm1-23.spectranet.ca: An excellent job on both the water and ship motion. Notable for modelling ===== From r@dial-up7.webbernet.net: The ship was well done. The animated sails were very good, an essential touch. The 3D water looked good, but the interaction of the ship and the water was a bit unnatural at times. The lightning was very effective. This is one animation that would benefit greatly from a suitable soundtrack, say an excerpt from "The Flying Dutchman". Good job. ===== From r@pm1-21.spectranet.ca: Great effect with the water and the boats motion. Notable for composition ===== From r@auasc7-104.flash.net: Nice lightening and work with the rolling waves! Perhaps telling a bit of a story would help, however. Notable for composition, lighting
