I decided to try my hand at this contest (it's my first). This is what I came up with: The Tardis (That's "Doctor Who" folks) traveling through the space-time vortex, with an attempt at surrealism from the floating clocks. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The Tardis (my first major CSG, was mostly finished when I found this contest) is a couple weeks worth of trial and error rendering. The vortex is a hollowed out colour mapped cylinder, and the Earth is an image mapped sphere (bigwld.gif- a map of the Earth, I don't remember where I downloaded it from). The clocks are a few simple CSG's using the Chars.inc file included with PovRay. The lightning was created by "Stomps Spark Generator", and scaled to fit the scene. The only real trick was finding and removing all of the shadows that were hitting the sky. A lot of test rendering and some trial and error work with the no_shadow command and I think I got them all.
