There are several plant generators out there.  Most are for DO$, but a few have the source code avalible.  Good luck.

Nice picture, but you're right, it is a little monotonous.  I maintain the
Linux  Graphics mini-Howto and the Unix Graphics utilities web pages and 
haven't come across any tools for creating trees that specifically run on Unix
systems, unfortunately.  There is an include file for trees that you could use,
or just use one of the modellers available (sced, ac3d, amapi, etc) to do it.

composition are just fine.  What are those black spots in the middle of the
grass?
