TITLE: Kumite, the finals NAME: Gerard SCHOCKMEL (G.S.) COUNTRY: Burkina Faso EMAIL: MSFL.BF@FASONET.BF WEBPAGE: N/A TOPIC: MAGIC COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: kumite.jpg ZIPFILE: kumite.zip RENDERER USED: POVRAY 3.1 for Windows TOOLS USED: Moray 2.5, sPatch, TexMagic RENDER TIME: 1 hour, 5 minutes HARDWARE USED: P120 Notebook, 24 MB RAM, Win95 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A wink at the various Fighting-games and films, and contemporary sporting-events : The finals of the famous many-worlds Mage Kumite. After the favorite, and last century winner, HeadBanger the Red was surprisingly eliminated in the semi-finals (R.I.P.), the newcomer PortalKeeper stands against the evil Oberias (BTW, it's a well-known fact that Oberias has killed PortalKeeper's parents when the latter was a kid, and is now out seeking revenge... ;) Doesn't that remind you of a hundred film with a similar background story... Each of them has already won a round, and now it's looking pretty bad for Oberias. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The scene was code-written in Povray, with occasional previews modeled in Moray 2.5b. The mages and spectators were done using sPatch. Most of the textures are my own, and were done either with Moray or Texture Magic. Otherwise, the shipped Textures from PovRay were used. Obviously, the Halos need some more work on them, but I did them as good as I could. The robe colors of the spectators are random created, so please excuse occasional eye-hurts. Lighting was a major problem, and I'm still not entirely satisfied. I was planning to use Radiosity with 4 lightsources positioned above the 4 torches. But radiosity made my halo containers become partly visible. Tried as I could, but I was not able to remove them (changed radiosity settings, put everything in Finish to zero, etc. but no avail). Hints welcome!! I started raytracing now 2 month ago, as I came across POVRAY for Windows by pure luck, and got hooked immediately. I decided to participate in the IRTC as magic is one of my favorite themes (books, roleplaying, etc). So I started on the project on august 12, and now its sunday, 31st, and time is running out quickly. The scene is still rendering on a DOS notebook, and I'm getting impatient. Thanks for commenting on my scene for improvement. Gerard Schockmel
