TITLE: Beginning Magic 101 NAME: Tetsuto "Teddy" Nishiyama COUNTRY: Japan EMAIL: tnishi@ari.ncl.omron.co.jp TOPIC: magic COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: magic101.jpg ZIPFILE: magic101.zip RENDERER USED: Povray 3.0 for Windows TOOLS USED: Moray, Paintshop Pro, Povray for Windows RENDER TIME: 1 hour 41 minutes 32 seconds HARDWARE USED: Gateway P5-166 IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Magic 101: This is an image showing that there's a bit of real magic for everyone. Even beginners just starting out from a book. I thought that 1:01 a.m. was an appropriate time for a bit of this magic to happen. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: Considering that this is my first attempt at raytracing,I really didn't do anything technically spectacular. Just tried a number of the examples in the Povray and Moray tutorials and proceeded to create the first idea...as well as the most challenging for me...the lamp. This lamp is a fully functional lamp in that it swivels where it's supposed to. :) One flaw though is that it doesn't have a light bulb ...but it doesn't show in this particualar image so I guess it's ok. lot's of CSG's. I figure that it wasn't too bad for my first original object. The beginner magic book is a set of about 24 bezier patches and I figured that I could save myself a bit of extra work by making the book paperback...as well as the fact that I couldn't figure out how to do a good hard back book with my limited knowledge. Some people may recognize the image on the cover. It's the logo for a game company that produces adventure games and the "author" is one of the characters in a particular game that I really liked. This image was created by scanner and Paintshop Pro. The 10,000 yen bill (about $90.00) is just another bezier patch. The clock is the CASIO that wakes me up every morning so I won't be late for work...just a combination of CSG's and imagemaps. The photo is of my wife and I during our honeymoon. I thought it would be fun to see myself in a make believe world. I had a bit of trouble with the glass cover but I think it came out better than I thought. For the "magic", I used a transparent upside down cone and attempted a strange halo...I actually wanted to get a glittery effect but I just couldn't figure out how, so I resorted to using a halo instead. Like I said, nothing technically interesting... Oh, but speaking of interesting the image that I was ORIGINALLY going to enter had just a normal and boring camera angle and this was before I took a look at some of the other entries from the past. All I can say is "Wow!". I figured that I needed to make the image a bit more interesting with what I had so I figured that giving the camera a bit of a wide angle would make the image just a bit more interesting. (In the zip file I only added the files for the model and none of the image maps to save space.) Any comments and advice would be greatly appreciated...Thanks! I hope I see everyone again next round. :)
