IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

On the morning of a baptism in the local church. The minister has just been in
to light the candles and raised a dust in passing. The light beams play across
the water in the font.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

Nothing complicated here. All modelled in Pov and once the scene took shape the
best part of a month was spent playing around with different atmosphere types
and then figures. Being over an hour to trace at 160x120 and 6 samples made it
a slow process but I am pleasd with the results. One of Sonya's trees sits
outside the window to add a little realism to the outside world. Some of the
detail has become a little
distant from the camera; if you look hard you might make out a cobweb on the
right hand set of candles. The candles themselves have wax runs down the sides
and the flames are transparent in places. The wall hangings are yellow silk on
crushed velvet. The yellow braid fringe looks quite realistic up close but
loses out at distance. I will have to pay more attention to the adage regarding
perception and quality. The inscription on the plaque reads, for those who are
interested,..
As cauld a wind as e'er blew,
As cauld a kirk, and innit but few;
As cauld a preacher that ever spak,
Ye'se a be het ere I come back.
A verse written by Robert Burns after a visit to the Kirk of Lamington, and
clearly he did not tihnk much of it. Translated it would read "As cold a wind
as ever blew, as cold a church, and in it but few; As cold a preacher that ever
spoke, you shall all be hot before I come back."

As the image developed I began to notice a yellowish cast appearing at the top
of the columns, I have to confess I have no idea what is responsible for this.
I have looked all over, at first I thought it must be the filter on the candle
flames, each of which is a light source, but no. Diffuse and specualar were
turned off wherever I could find them, all lights are whites or grays. Has me
completely beat, but one can look upon it as smoke stains from the flickering
candles if they so wish. ;-)
