TITLE: StormWarden NAME: Stephen Catchpole COUNTRY: Australia EMAIL: catchpol@netspace.net.au WEBPAGE: http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/8778 TOPIC: Water COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: swarden.jpg ZIPFILE: swarden.zip RENDERER USED: POVRay for Windows 95 TOOLS USED: Text editor, photoshop for making the height map RENDER TIME: about 30 minutes HARDWARE USED: Pentium 166 with 32MB of RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This is my first ever complete image that I have created with PovRAY. This picture was inspired by a book called Stormwarden, by Janny Wurtz. I originally conceived the concept for the section on Elements, but did not have time to begin the image until recently. In this book, the Stormwarden is a wizard who has control over the wet elements -- air and water. He becomes an outcast after refusing to assist an evil queen. In this picture I have created an image of him controlling the water as he stands outcast on a peak. He also is creating a storm, as lightning swirls around him. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: This image is actually a fairly simple image. The ocean is simply a plane with a saw-tooth bumps pattern. The rocks are height_maps, created in Photoshop. The spiral of water is simply a CSG merge of half-torii. The wizard's body was made with a height_map and a texture map. The other objects in the picture are simply CSG collections and blobs. There is a fog on the ground, and the flare around the staff is a cylindrical halo object, repeated five times around a circle.
