TITLE: Through The Looking Glass NAME: Kent D. Johnson COUNTRY: United States of America EMAIL: kentdj@revealed.net TOPIC: Water COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: waterwin.jpg ZIPFILE: waterwin.zip RENDERER USED: POVRay 3.1a for Windows TOOLS USED: Micrografx Picture Publisher 7 RENDER TIME: About 6 minutes HARDWARE USED: PentiumPro 200MHz - WinNT Workstation 4SP3 - 128MB RAM IMAGE DESCRIPTION: It all started back in the 'Flight' round when Admin Bill Marrs submitted an image titled 'winseat'. It pretty well got raked over the coals. But not nearly so much as when another Admin (I forget which one) submitted another version of the 'winseat' image a few rounds later. As one of the Associate Admins I am hereby fulfilling one of my obligations by submitting my own 'winseat' image. Basically, this is the ever-familiar view from the window of the winseat plane. Only problem is that the plane has crashed into the ocean. As a final bit of revenge, a couple of fish use the opportunity to peer into the 'fishbowl'. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I started by copying Bill Marrs' original source file for his 'winseat' image from the 'Flight' round (I think he used POVSB to build his image). After getting that working under POV3.1 I began modifying it for this round. The ocean is a heightfield created in Picture Publisher by drawing several overlapping circular gradients, running a 'twirl' filter on it and then blurring heavily. The ocean heightfield is intersected with a vertical plane running through the center of the window opening. Since the ocean is partially transparent, I had to put a 'black box' (no pun intended) at the far end of the scene so the clouds from the sky sphere wouldn't show through. Finally, I needed to add a couple of fish so you could tell you were looking at water. So I asked fellow associate admin Sonya Roberts if I could borrow the fish from her 'Summer' entry - a request she graciously obliged. As a last request here, please don't spend much (any?) time commenting on this image. I know it's pretty bad :-)
