TITLE: fish & chips NAME: Marc Schimmler COUNTRY: Germany EMAIL: schimmler@ica.uni-stuttgart.de WEBPAGE: http://www.ica.uni-stuttgart.de/~marc/povray.html TOPIC: Unbelievable COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: fishandc.jpg ZIPFILE: fishandc.zip RENDERER USED: povray 3.1e for linux (unofficial compile) TOOLS USED: sPatch, gimp, kolors.inc by Uncle Ken, xv, paper & pencil RENDER TIME: about 6 hours HARDWARE USED: Pentium 90 with 48 MB ram IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This picture is a result of a OT thread at c.g.r.r. A well known Pover who started working at Motorolla in Texas made a remark about the quality (or the lack of it) of the canteen food served there. Instantly fish & chip came to my mind and I asked him about it but I fear my joke was lost on him... :-( This was the starting of this picture. From the imaginary diary of D.C. in A.: "Today I started working at the company. Work was fine until I went to lunch. My colleagues were talking about "brain food" or "hi-tech food" served at the canteen. I shrugged my shoulders and thought to myself what the heck they meant. They told me just to sit down and that they would bring me the plate so I took the offer and waited. I was just in the middle of my thoughts when they returned ... but what this ... FISH & CHIPS ??!!!" DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The biggest work had been the texturing here. The fried fish is a heightfield made with gimp, the ketchup are a few blobs and the chips are csg with a small image map for the printed text. The plate, the salad leaf, the fork and the knife were made with sPatch while the glass objects are all pure csg. Render times became a real problem on my old machine when the textures became more and more complicated. A special thank to Ken Tyler for his kolors.inc and Axel Hecht for his Perl script to create a html-page of it. I also greet all those at new.povray and c.g.r.r. Especially D.C. and I hope he will forgive me my joking.
