TITLE: Eyes Deceive NAME: John Hoerr COUNTRY: USA EMAIL: jhoerr@one.net TOPIC: Unbelievable COPYRIGHT: I SUBMIT TO THE STANDARD RAYTRACING COMPETITION COPYRIGHT. JPGFILE: jh_eyes.jpg RENDERER USED: POV-Ray for Windows TOOLS USED: PaperPort 5.3.1 for image maps, copyright text, and .jpg conversion RENDER TIME: Five hours HARDWARE USED: Pentium, 200 Mhz IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Three "unbelievable" optical illusions. Note -- The two upside-down portraits are of the late composer John Cage. The one on the right has been reconstructed. Try to imagine what he looks like right-side up, then flip the image or turn your head to the side to see the illusion. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: If you don't know how these illusions work, they do not involve post-processing (just in case someone suspects). Look closely at the shadows on the wall for a hint. The trickiest part of this image was the fact that the "impossible" triangle illusion works from only one viewing angle. This put a limitation on the number of ways to compose the scene. I did have some choice in the placement of the crate, but in order to preserve the illusion, I had to modify it whenever it was moved. It did occur to me that I could calculate the modifications automatically in POV, but not until I had already settled on its final location. This is my first submission to the IRTC. I have not included the source because it has changed somewhat since the image that I am submitting was rendered. All of the textures came from the POV include files, and I was in the process of replacing them with my own when I ran out of time (I didn't find out about the competition until 2 weeks ago).
