Its constuction began in 1885 and ended in 1889 at the cost of almost 1 million dollars. In 1957 the building was renovated with gold leaf from the mines at Dahlonaga, Georgia (the site of the first gold rush in America). The gold was transported through the city of Atlanta via a mule train. In 1971 the gold on the dome was renewed with gold leaf. The gold was again brought from Dahlonega by wagon train. The statue on top of the dome is made of copper and painted white. It ,or rather she, is called "Miss Freedom." She carries a torch and a sword and wears a cap of freedom. This kind of cap was pesented to slaves in ancient Greece when they became free. The legend of the statue's origin states that it was a gift from the state of Ohio and was given to Georgia to atone for the destuction caused by Ohio's General William T. Sherman during the Civil War. The two flags in the background represent the struggle between a divided nation. The building today flies both flags together. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: I downloaded as many pictures of the capitol as a could. The best site had many pictures and a history of the building. Its at http://www.sos.state.ga.us/capitolguide . I was able to use a building plan to get the shape of the building. I outlined the plan in Adobe Illustrator and imported it to Raydream', freeform modelling program. I used the same object to create trim. I did not want to cut up the original block with windows and doors so I used complex window groups that used a reflective pane rather than a transparent one. After visiting the capitol and taking some pictures, I realized that it was a 2 tone building, so I just duplicated the main block again and used some texture from the actual building to get the right tones and texture. The building started to exceed my 64 megs of memory when I finished the lower dome, so my computer was using drive space for memory by the time the building was done. When I added the tree, the size of the program doubled. The tree is duplicated many times, some can only be seen in the reflection of windows. It is made from the fog objects and fountain objects in Raydream, lots of them! The trunks are extruded complex objects. The stautue was made using a downloaded picture in Illustrator, making the outline, and importing that into the Raydream freeform modelling program.
