IMAGE DESCRIPTION:
The image shows the german offshore lighthouse "Roter Sand",
some nautical miles north of the city of Bremerhaven. It might have been the
last
german landmark to be seen by many emigrants leaving Germany by ship for the New
World.
It served as a major navigational aid in the german bay from 1885 until 1964.
Now it is
preserved as a national monument.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:
The shape of the lighthouse was
transferred from
photographs (some taken by me and some found on the net) and a sketch was drawn
on paper. Then
a simple model using the rotational symmetry of the main body was programmed and
modified using
POV-Ray until the final image resulted. The water was generated by manipulating
a heightfield
created by POV-Ray with Paintshop Pro. The final heightfield is included as a
PNG file called
"uzrotsnd.htf".
