I'm afraid your subtlety will likely be lost on most judges. 
I had to zoom in to clearly see the face on the left wall. 
As for the painting. I can't get enough detail on it to be 
able to identify it.

Everything seems very foreshortened. Also very blocky. I cannot see the 
picture clearly, so if it was meant to be the horror, I guess I'm missing it. 
I like subtle. This is so subtle that I can't decipher it. I like the 
mantel but the bricks on the fireplace are too crisp and bright. The 
rocking-chair is great and I like the bookshelves. Just what is that thing on
the wall on the left? A face? Maybe that's the horror? Still too subtle.

Oh, excuse me, there it is.  The face in the wall.  Boo.

I think the image would be more effective if you found a way to make the terror immediately visible to the viewer, but not to the occupants of the room.  This introduces a cinematic energy where the viewer wants to shout, "look out!  It's right behind you!" to the unsuspecting family.
