The Guayana region was very important in my country's history. A main entrance to Amazonia, the Orinoco River developed also as a fast way for conquerors to gain the center and north of the country- lured by "El Dorado Myth", thus entering and conquering the continent thereafter. Along the river, spanish fortresses were aligned to repel intruders from overseas. With a star-like foundation, fortress' corners were vital in the defensive action., the worst were underground dungeons. In colonial times, fortresses centralized spanish power, gold and wealth sent to the Spanish empire. In the Independence War times, they simbolized the "realist" -spanish- power, finally defeated in 1821. As time passed, fortresses were forgotten and in some of them only ruins remain. Some other are in a relatively good shape. Many of them were blown up before letting the enemy inside, a common practice. However, colonial architecture is distinguished precisely by its strenght. I have tried to represent one of them, in front of the great river, witness of so many things in my home land. DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED: The "corner" of the fortress was made first, modeled in SPatch. The sentinel box is made with CSG, repeated and then set in place. The texture of the boxes is primarily made with plates.inc, which distributes bricks along cylinder and a sphere. The texture over the bricks is procedural, as well as the one used in the fortress itself. The river has two planes. The deepest plane is a flat color, to support the upper plane. The upper plane has two layered textures -procedural also- The terrains in front of the fortress were scaled, textured and placed. The "cluster" to the left is composed by by 2 height_fields, one of them repeated to cover the surroundings and simulate sand. The cannon and carrier were modeled in sPatch. Cannon balls are simple spheres. Weeds are from "Gardens" entry, mg_patio. The left part of the fortress is made with CSG. The platform is modeled in sPatch, as well as the fence. There are two spotlights and 3 light sources, besides the global one. Fog was set -very light- at a far distance to enhance depth and diminish the reflection of the sand at the left. //Modeler /* ****sPatch**** Copyright 1996-1998 by Mike Clifton. */ //Color Handling /* ****ColorPicker**** by Jamis Buck buck@cs.byu.edu */ //Graphic software ****Corel Photopaint 8.0 - Para compresi_n e identificaci_n digimarc ****Paint Shop Pro 5.0- Para modificar im_genes 2d */ /* Im_genes bidimensionales utilizadas avila6_b.tga.
